SUBTOTAL is one of the most valuable function in excel. It returns the sub total of numbers in a particular column.
Syntax:
=SUBTOTAL(function_num, ref1, [ref2], ...)
The list of values for the function_num argument are shown below.

3 | 103 | COUNTA |

To get the function number in sub total, type the formula in excel as shown in the below picture.
Though we have separate built-in function in excel, what is the purpose of SUBTOTAL function.
We will see small example to understand clearly.
For the below table, apply sub total function to get SUM value of amount from "column D" as shown in the below picture.
If you place a filter on the above table by selecting car, then the subtotal will calculate the visible cells from the table as shown in the below picture.
Now if you see the total sum, it will calculate the amount of car. This is the main use of sub total in excel. Hope you have understood the function clearly.
